Independent Jewish Voices Canada fully supports anti-Islamophobia Motion, Condemns Canadian Jewish Establishment
Ottawa, ON— Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV) expresses its support for Liberal MP Iqra Khalid’s motion opposing Islamophobia, all forms of systemic racism and religious discrimination. The motion is expected to go to a vote in April.
“IJV is strongly opposed to all forms of bigotry, including Islamophobia. We wish to stand in solidarity with all Canadian Muslims who sadly live in a society in which they face unacceptable levels of systemic racism and religious discrimination,” says IJV spokesperson Tyler Levitan. “While we applaud any initiatives to oppose racism and discrimination in general, such as a recent motion supported by the opposition parties in the House of Commons, we believe M-103 is critical to specifically address increasing Islamophobia.”
“We are greatly disturbed by the opposition to M-103 expressed by the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA), which falsely portrays itself as the representative voice of Jewish Canadians,” continues Levitan. “It is highly insensitive to oppose this motion on the grounds that the term ‘Islamophobia’ is not to your liking. Muslim Canadians need our support now more than ever, and such divisive tactics only foment further bigotry.”
“We call on all Jewish organizations in Canada to stand with IJV and Jewish commentators Bernie Farber and Mira Sucharov in support of this motion. Opposing this motion in the wake of the Quebec City terrorist attack—as CIJA has done—while referencing a completely unrelated sermon in a mosque from 2014, conveys a serious lapse in moral judgement. Since CIJA lobbied for a motion on antisemitism in 2015—which actually poses a tangible threat to the right to freely criticize Israel’s behaviour through its support for implementing the Ottawa Protocol—it is hypocritical at best for CIJA to oppose M-103,” concludes Levitan.
