Independent Jewish Voices Canada applauds Canada’s restoration of funding to UNRWA
OTTAWA– Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV) is elated by the Liberal government’s decision to restore annual funding to the humanitarian organization for Palestinian refugees run by the United Nations, known as UNRWA.
“After numerous years of Canada withholding of funding, we are delighted to see that the Liberal government is committed to the wellbeing of millions of vulnerable Palestinian refugees through the restoration of funding to UNRWA,” says IJV spokesperson Tyler Levitan.
$20 million of this funding will go towards increasing access to education, health and social services. An additional $5 million is slated to assist Palestinian refugees impacted negatively by the dire humanitarian situation in Syria and the surrounding area.
“While we welcome this decision by the Liberal government, we are still awaiting the government’s actions against Israel’s illegal practices. Humanitarian assistance is hugely important, but it will never replace Canada’s obligation to demand freedom, justice and equality for the Palestinians,” concludes Levitan.
