Conservatives’ labeling of BDS campaigns as “anti-Semitism” warrants apology
Ottawa, ON – In an effort to pander to its base of right-wing Jewish and evangelical Christian supporters, the Conservatives have once again trivialized real anti-Semitism and sought to silence legitimate dissent by equating critics of Israel’s deplorable human rights record with prejudice towards Jewish people. Posters in Montreal promoting Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) against Israel prompted this reaction.
“How sickening to see the Conservatives continue to shamelessly seek votes through smearing those who advocate for equal rights for Palestinians and Israeli Jews,” says Independent Jewish Voices Canada spokesperson Tyler Levitan. “Economic and moral pressure through BDS are the only tools left to persuade Israel to change course from its current path of extreme violence and deepening discrimination, and finally accept Palestinians as human beings entitled to equal rights.”
The Conservatives continue to maintain that BDS is anti-Semitic, but refuse to provide any evidence for this allegation.
“Throwing around the term ‘anti-Semitism’ without a shred of credible evidence trivializes the real struggle against anti-Semitism around the world, and belittles the suffering of Jews who have historically faced enormous persecution simply for being Jewish,” says Levitan. “IJV considers such pandering and bullying of human rights advocates to be entirely unacceptable. We demand an apology from the Conservatives for such blatant exploitation of the term anti-Semitism for perceived political gains, and for intimidating human rights advocates.”
