IJV Condemns Anti-Semitic Incidents in France;
Calls on Israel to Stop Fomenting Anti-Semitism
Independent Jewish Voices – Canada (IJV) deplores credible reports of anti-Semitism, such as Jewish-owned shops in Sarcelles, France that were recently ransacked. IJV condemns in the strongest of terms, all racially-motivated violence related to the Israeli attack on Gaza.
It is important to understand that Israel’s violent crimes against an occupied, captive Arab Palestinian population, are committed in the name of all Jews. This is a catalyst for the revival of anti-Semitic attitudes.
When organized Jewish communities refuse to condemn — or worse, support — Israel’s occupation, colonization and massacres in Palestine, while attempting to marginalize Jews like us who oppose the occupation, it creates the false impression that all Jews are complicit in Israel’s war crimes.
Of course many Jews oppose Israel’s actions. But so long as Israel and its allies in the West continue the wanton destruction of Arab Palestinian society, global anti-Semitism can only increase.
Although Jews around the world largely live in safety and prosperity, the State of Israel and its lobbying claim Jews are victims. Some Jewish organizations even resort to fabricating anti-Semitic incidents that appear to bear this out. Recent claims that a Parisian synagogue was surrounded by terrorist thugs hell-bent on attacking the Jews within it — were entirely false. Like the questionable charge of anti-Semitism directed at last week’s Calgary protest, both incidents resulted after pro-Israel militants tussled with protesters.
Manufacturing false, anti-Semitic incidents, effectively crying wolf, raises doubts when real anti-Semitism occurs.
Pro-Israel organizations are adept at rallying the Jewish community with memories of our historical persecution and genocide. Groups like Canada’s Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) and the B’nai Brith extensively hype real and invented anti-Semitism. This is intentional, and serves several purposes:
* It deflects attention from Israel’s occupation and war crimes;
* It uses fear to mobilize Jews, and silences dissent;
* And it encourages Jews to leave their so-called “anti-Semitic” countries and settle in the “Jewish homeland”.
Pro-Israel organizations try to undermine demands for Palestinian rights and criticism of Israel, as anti-Semitism. Several years ago, the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Anti-Semitism was established solely to attack Palestinian solidarity activists and organizations on the pretext that criticizing Israel is anti-Semitic.
Independent Jewish Voices holds that this misuse of anti-Semitism by pro-Israel organizations has proven not only deadly for Palestinians , but also is toxic for Jews. It traps Jews in a vicious cycle of fear, blame and revenge, and it undermines any vision for a hopeful resolution of the Palestine-Israel conflict.
