OTTAWA – A coalition of activists and organizers, including members of Courage and Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV), are set to bring forward a resolution at this weekend’s NDP policy convention that will push the party to adopt a more vigorous approach to addressing the problem of illegal settlements in Palestine. The resolution is also backed by the New Dem
ocratic Youth of Canada and the Young New Democrats of Quebec. It has been endorsed by 26 NDP riding associations across the country, as well as by former and current NDP politicians, members of Israeli civil society, academics and grassroots activists and organizers.
“In a time of unparalleled and intersecting social, political, environmental, and economic crises, it is important that the NDP stand with and take direction from marginalized communities and those fighting for peace and justice everywhere. The NDP has a long history of standing in solidarity with marginalized and otherwise oppressed groups. We must ask ourselves: why is standing for the rights of Palestinians any different?” said IJV representative and Courage member Jake Cohen.
If passed, the resolution would lead the NDP to become the largest Canadian political party advocating for the use of diplomatic and non-violent pressure to end Israel’s military occupation of Palestinian lands. It would position the NDP as one of the few parties addressing the plight of Palestinian refugees, bringing an end to the Gaza blockade, and advocating the banning of illegal settlement products.
“The NDP has been championing reconciliation here at home, and now we must do the same with our foreign policy. This is an instance where we have an opportunity to be agents of change and peace, and to be leaders for justice.”
The resolution will be presented at the upcoming convention, February 15-18th.
