Independent Jewish Voices Canada congratulates King’s College students for voting to divest from war profiteers in Israel/Palestine
OTTAWA, ON — Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV) has offered its congratulations to students at King’s College of the University of Western Ontario. 75% of students who cast a vote in the student referendum support divesting from companies that are complicit in human rights violations against Palestinians.
“A strong majority of students who came out to vote in the referendum chose to stand on the right side of history by demanding that their university divest itself from human rights abuses against Palestinians,” says Tyler Levitan, spokesperson for IJV.
“It is both disappointing and shameful to see the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs — which falsely portrays itself as the representative voice of the diverse Jewish communities of Canada — accuse such principled students of having ‘bigoted motives’. Choosing to distance oneself from Israel’s systematic human rights violations is a decision motivated by compassion and a strong sense of justice, both of which are held dearly in the Jewish tradition,” continues Levitan.
“Rather than intimidate students who choose to support human rights for Palestinians, pro-Israel lobby groups should focus their energies on challenging actual antisemitism in Canada, as evidenced by the rise of white supremacist hatred towards Jews,” concludes Levitan.
