Independent Jewish Voices Canada applauds Niki Ashton’s Support for Palestinian Rights
Ottawa, ON— After NDP leadership candidate Niki Ashton made a Facebook post expressing solidarity with Palestinian rights, Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV) joined with Canadians from across the country in offering their support.
“IJV is inspired by Ashton’s courageous support for human rights,” says IJV spokesperson Tyler Levitan. “It is rare for a Canadian politician to openly express their solidarity with the Palestinians’ plight.”
“Sadly, B’nai Brith Canada, which provides unconditional support for the far-right Netanyahu government, launched a smear campaign against Ashton for daring to express her solidarity with Palestinians facing human rights abuses,” continued Levitan.
“Not only did Ashton join Amnesty International Canada and the Canadian Labour Congress in demanding dignity and basic human rights for Palestinian prisoners detained illegally in Israeli prisons, she also acknowledged the Nakba– the forced displacement of roughly 750,000 Palestinians upon the founding of Israel.
“The fact that she is willing to take such a stand conveys a leader who appreciates the importance of the growing support for Palestinian rights, and who refuses to back down to bullying.
“IJV is especially appreciative of Ashton’s recognition of the Nakba, since our Prime Minister chose once again to ignore Nakba Day. While Trudeau may fail to see the importance of recognizing the humanity of Palestinians, the majority of Canadians would beg to differ,” concluded Levitan.
