Independent Jewish Voices Canada Disappointed in Canadian Government Abstention on UN Jerusalem Vote
Independent Jewish Voices Canada is disappointed and ashamed of the Canadian government’s abstention in today’s vote at the United Nations General Assembly on the recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. The abstention shows Canada caving in once again to US and Israeli pressure.
On December 6th, Donald Trump announced his government’s intent to move its embassy to Jerusalem, contrary to international opinion. Today UN members voted on a resolution condemning the US move. Of the UN’s 193 member states, Canada was one of 35 countries to abstain from that motion. 9 member states voted against, including US and Israel.
What makes Canada’s abstention all the more craven is that Canada is on record opposing recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital. This is a wise position, as it leaves the status of that city subject to a final resolution between Israel and the Palestinians. The US embassy move threatens to further tip the balance in Israel’s favour, amounting to support for Israel’s illegal and immoral occupation and annexation of East Jerusalem.
Corey Balsam, National Coordinator of Independent Jewish Voices Canada, said, “Given the opportunity to affirm its own policy on Jerusalem and condemn Trump’s provocation, the Canadian government chose to capitulate to the US and Israel. By abstaining, they have demonstrated the Canadian government’s unwillingness to stand for a just peace in Israel-Palestine.”
Earlier in the week, the US Ambassador to the UN told member states that the US “will be taking names” of resolution opponents. Donald Trump even went as far as threatening to punish member states for voting against the US by cutting aid.
Said Balsam, “Trump’s bullying tactics show just how isolated the US and Israel are on the world stage. We’re happy that Canada at the very least abstained, but still expect our representatives to go further. Now is the time for Canada to assert its independence and become a leading force for peace and justice that all Canadians can be proud of.”
