Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV) was deeply dismayed to learn that the Green Party of Canada has fired three shadow cabinet members. The firings followed an article, written with 21 other prominent Greens, that supports recently adopted Green Party policy.
The article is a diplomatically worded defense of the federal Greens’ Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) resolution against Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian territories. This resolution has come under repeated attacks by BC Green Party leader Andrew Weaver, who opposed the resolution even making it onto the convention floor. However, the resolution debated at the convention passed with overwhelming support despite Weaver’s opposition, becoming official party policy.
The fact that three shadow cabinet members defended the Party’s official policy does not warrant their dismissal.
IJV stands in solidarity with Dimitri Lascaris, Lisa Barrett and Colin Griffiths in their principled and courageous support for Palestinians’ human rights, and against the bullying tactics of Israel lobby groups.
We will continue to work with strong allies like these three Green Party members to support non-violent tactics such as BDS, until Israel recognizes the Palestinians’ inalienable rights.
