Independent Jewish Voices Canada applauds UN Security Council for its resolution opposing illegal Israeli settlements
Ottawa, ON– Independent Jewish Voices Canada (IJV) welcomes today’s United Nations Security Council resolution opposing Israel’s colonies within the occupied Palestinian territory. UN Security Council resolutions are binding under international law.
“We are delighted to see that the UN’s highest body has reaffirmed its support for Palestinians’ human rights through its condemnation of Israel’s illegal settlements,” says IJV spokesperson Tyler Levitan. “The UN Security Council’s position reflects Canada’s official policy, which regards these illegal settlements as violations of the Fourth Geneva Convention.”
The resolution demands that Israel “immediately and completely cease all settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem,” and regards the establishment of Israel’s colonies as having “no legal validity” and constituting “a flagrant violation under international law.”
“IJV expects Canada, as a member of the UN and a party to the Fourth Geneva Convention, to ensure that international law is upheld by pressuring its close ally, Israel, into respecting the human rights of Palestinians. Silence is no longer an option, as Israel’s military occupation approaches fifty years,” concludes Levitan.
