Likud victory spells permanent apartheid rule for the Palestinians
OTTAWA – The result of the Israeli election signals the continued occupation of Palestinian lands and the failure to recognize the rights of Palestinians under Israel’s control, according to the human rights organization Independent Jewish Voices – Canada (IJV).
“Netanyahu promised the Israeli public that he will make sure that a Palestinian state never comes into being, and thus, the Palestinians will remain an occupied people under a system of differential rights. As Israeli leaders have warned, this situation is indicative of the crime of apartheid under international law,” says Tyler Levitan, spokesperson for IJV.
“The Israeli election results should demonstrate clearly that Israel will not willingly change its oppressive policies towards the Palestinians,” says Levitan. “This reinforces how important the global movement of boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) is. BDS remains the best tool available to supporters of a just and lasting peace to pressure Israel into ending its current path of endless occupation and the denial of the human rights of Palestinians. Without such external pressure, we will all witness Israel’s continued colonization of what little remains of Palestine.”
