Harper government shameless in linking human rights activism with anti-Semitism
OTTAWA—”The Harper government is shameless in its opportunism,” stated Tyler Levitan of Independent Jewish Voices – Canada (IJV). “It stoops to capitalize on a tragic situation by attacking human rights activists.” Levitan denounced what he characterizes as the Harper government’s most recent attempt to silence proponents of the international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which seeks to pressure Israel to respect the rights of Palestinians by ending its illegal occupation, granting equal rights to Israeli Arab citizens and honouring the right to return of exiled Palestinians.
The Harper government’s ministers have recently launched a propaganda campaign against BDS activism, with Minister of Public Safety Steve Blaney and Minister of Citizenship and Immigration Chris Alexander both slandering BDS as anti-Semitic, just in the past week. “Israel and its allies wasted no time in drawing highly questionable links between Palestinian human rights activism and the Charlie Hebdo/Kosher market murderers, terrorism, anti-Semitism and the Holocaust,” explained Levitan. “Their propaganda machine is highly adept at spinning tragedy and crisis in order to cover up Israel’s ongoing crimes against the Palestinians.”
“The Harper government is strongly opposed to freedom of speech on this issue,” stated Levitan. “Remember their support for the Canadian Parliamentary Coalition to Combat Anti-Semitism (CPCCA) initiative? After trying to slander Canadians who support Palestinian human rights as anti-Semites and criminalize such speech as a hate crime, the CPCCA ended up as an embarrassment and a disgrace.”
