Independent Jewish Voices strongly condemns Israel’s assault on Gaza
OTTAWA- Independent Jewish Voices – Canada (IJV) is outraged by the Israeli assault on Gaza and condemns the attacks that have caused a rising number of Palestinian deaths.
There is no justification for the death and injury of civilian lives no matter what the state of Israel claims as the provocation. IJV acknowledges the impact of the barrage of rocket fire that Hamas has launched and the fear and distress sustained by Israelis as a consequence.
But as IJV spokesperson Tyler Levitan stated: “this is no excuse for the large-scale attack by sea and air through artillery shelling on the whole of Gaza. This raises the issue of proportionality. There have been no injuries or deaths, nor any major damage caused by the Hamas rockets. In Gaza, the opposite holds true. To date, there have been at least 24 deaths—including several children— 152 injured, and extensive physical damage, as well as untold emotional pain and suffering inflicted on the people of Gaza. To condemn a whole population for the actions of a few is wrong, and is illegal under international law.”
Levitan went on to point out that “these attacks come during Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, creating additional hardship for the people of Gaza—a people who are predominately refugees expelled from current-day Israel, and who have been besieged by Israel’s widely condemned blockade of collective punishment for over seven years.”
As the Israeli army prepares for a potential ground invasion into Gaza, IJV urges the Israeli government to change course and seek a diplomatic route to the current conflict— one based on the application of international law and respect for the human rights of all parties. As a starting point, Israel must end its illegal blockade of the Gaza Strip, and its 47 year-long military occupation and colonization of the West Bank.
