Independent Jewish Voices – Canada (IJV) expresses our sincere condolences to the families and friends of the victims of these murders.
Like all Canadians, we adamantly oppose the attacks in St-Jean-Sur-Richelieu, Quebec and Ottawa, and any similar action motivated by any belief system that advocates the use of violence as a means to a political end.
In these difficult times, it is essential to remember that Canada’s military actions in the Middle East also result in indiscriminate death and destruction that are no less tragic and senseless than the ones on Canadian soil.
We urge Canadians to stand firmly for human rights by rejecting the vicious cycle of fear-prejudice-violence that generates Islamophobia.
We also urge Canadians to oppose the Harper government’s intention to exploit this tragic situation in a cynical attempt to convince us to trade our freedoms for an expansion of an invasive security and military apparatus, which will not make us safer, but will inevitably feed the cycle of fear-prejudice-violence.
